Ask Caren!

I spent 18 years authorizing services and equipment for clients in a community based services agency, and have a vast knowledge of what is available to provide the extra help you may be needing for yourself or another.  There is a wealth of resources out there, but only if you know what is there that can assist.  If you have a question that I can’t answer, rest assured I will get that answer from a professional who knows the topic.  No bad answers here!

  1. thanks for creating this. In Jan 2011 my husband Tom was diagnosed with stage IV Melanoma and is currently going through chemotherapy. So far he is doing very well. He had a port put in about a month ago. In Jan of this year I had a non-cancerous tumor removed that was on my left kidney, as a result I lost my kidney and spleen and was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I am managing it though with diet and exercise and taking Metformin. This has been a pretty big change for both of us and we are getting though it with help from our friends and our church (Wellsville United Methodist). Without all the support from them I don’t know how we would get through this.

    • Hi Barbara!
Sounds like you and your husband have both been through the medical wringer. I’m glad to know you are getting some help from your church family. This is tough stuff to go through on your own! I hope you and your husband can get your strength and whatever recovery is possible for you. And let folks help you if they can! Good luck, and keep me posted on how you both do! Caren

  2. hello, thank you for the todays publication in the Ottawa Herald. Terry was my 7th grade science teacher. I have often wondered where he was and what he was doing now. He always made learning exciting! Anyway the reason I am writing is that Chris (another student of his) had a stroke on February 21, 2010 and I came home from work to find him on the floor, he was 42 at the time. Chris and I have been a couple now for 7 years and he and I are raising his disabled son. Chris was left paralyzed on his left side with left-sided blindness and seizures, I stayed with him, quit my job to care for him full time, never to look back. We are not married in name but have the commitment of marriage. I have had many people say to me “why did you stay” I find it very offensive that they even ask me that question. Our life has changed tremendously since the stroke, we have a very different relationship but I love him just the same. Sometimes I have felt very alone, and I just want to say THANK YOU for making me realize I am not. People do not realize what they have til they lose it and I almost lost him, I thank GOD everyday for just letting me have him here with me.
Again, Thank you so much and I will definately follow your updates. Please tell Terry hello and our prayers are sent your way

    • Hi Kim,
I was sorry to read your news, but know that I do know what you’re going through. People who ask why you stay will never know the sacrifice and dedication it takes to care for someone you love when their health is changed forever. Please know what you are doing is a brave and important commitment to Chris and his son. Any time you need to talk to someone about what you’re going through you are always welcome to email me. I hope you continue to stay strong and healthy. You have to take care of you to take care of them! Best wishes for an easier road for you…Caren

      • you are truly an angel in dark times. you have created a website for those of us who seem to suffer alone. believe me it is so nice to know we are none of us alone in this adventure. I rely on God and a lot of prayer to get me through the day. I will definately send prayers your way when I have my little talks with God. thank you again for finding time in the day to answer and talk with all of us.
